Coal Engineering Pty Ltd has been in operation since 2005 where it started as a one man mobile welding business and has grown into a specialised engineering facility incorporating a licenced sand blasting and spray painting operation. The growth of our facilities and the services we offer are directly linked to the needs of our clients.
Coal Engineering is proactive in working with our clients to accommodate their schedules and deadlines whilst not compromising our responsibility to safety and fatigue management. We offer a mobile and fixed operation, with our reliable and efficient maintenance and fabrication team, servicing the mining industry throughout the Bowen basin.
Situated in Capella, Coal Engineering Pty Ltd is currently central to numerous coal mines. This means:
- freight costs are negligible/minimal
- access is within an hour
We aim to be a competitive service provider that invests in the future of the engineering trade by committing to the training of tomorrows youth.

We understand the nature of the coal mining industry and take an active role with our clients to work, not only on a development basis, but also in supporting a preventative maintenance program. We pride ourselves on developing an operation that is mindful of the future impact on the environment. The sandblasting and spray painting facility is designed so that emissions are filtered and the steel grit used is fully recyclable. The sand blast and spray paint booths are adjacent, allowing a streamlined process, eliminating impact from weather conditions.

- ERA 18(a) Boilermaking or Engineeering

Staff development is a key focus with not only the training of apprentices but the support of tradesmen with their career development. Coal Engineering’s key personnel include:
Managing Director: Wes Struckel
Duties: Operations Manager; Trainer Assessor; Planning; Drafting; Sales: Quoting; Human Resources Management; Boilermaker; Coded Welder. Has 20 years mining and construction experience.
Draftsman: Damien Smith
Duties: Planning; Drafting; Sales: Quoting; Quality Control
Leading Hand: Darren Scarlett
Duties: Planning; Supervising; Quality Control; Training; Boilermaking; Sand Blasting; Spray Painting.
Administration: Lydia Blee
Duties: Accounts Payable & Receivable; Payroll; Costing; Purchasing; Policy Development.
Boilermakers: Darren Scarlett, Jake Miller plus 3-5 casual positions
Duties: Boilermaking; Training.
Spray Painter: 1 full-time and 1 casual position
Duties: Spray Painting; Sand Blasting; Training.
Apprentices: Karl Ryan, Boyd Hoskin, Casey Curtis
Duties: Boilermaker and Fitter and Turner apprenticeships
